Important FAQs

Anti-wrinkle injections are composed of a natural purified protein, called Botulinum Toxin, (hence the origin of the name), that relaxes wrinkle-causing muscles creating a smoother, rejuvenated and more youthful appearance. The muscle relaxant inhibits the communication between the nerves and the muscles therefore disabling them from contracting and forming wrinkles. The number of injections required varies depending upon what part of the face is being treated.

Most patients find the treatment quick and easy and not too uncomfortable, some describe it as feeling like an ant-sting bite for a few seconds. The needles used are tiny micro needles and once the injection is complete, there is usually no discomfort. Very rarely some patients experience a mild headache after treatment. If necessary a local anaesthetic cream can be applied to the skin or ice is used to minimise the discomfort. We also have Entonox gas available.

On the Upper Face: It relaxes dynamic frown lines between the brow, on the forehead, bunny lines on the nose, and the wrinkles around the eyes. We can also achieve a good brow lift. It makes you look less worried, angry and tired, with a more relaxed, approachable, and confident look.

For the Lower Face: When used in a controlled fashion by a skilled physician with extensive experience, the product can cause a jowl lift and decrease a permanent mouth frown. We can also treat a gummy smile or bands in the neck. We also frequently use it to reshape a very pronounced or square jaw line due to enlarged jaw muscles (masseters).

To understand the various treatments of wrinkles, one must understand that there are different kinds of wrinkles, dynamic and static lines or wrinkles.

Dynamic lines or wrinkles are those wrinkles and lines that appear when your face is animated.

Static lines or wrinkles are those facial lines that are evident even when our face is at rest and are due to volume loss and are better treated with dermal fillers. These two types of wrinkles are what separate Botox from any of the injectable fillers.

Botox is for dynamic wrinkling. It is a muscle relaxing agent so it will soften the wrinkles and lines that occur from a dynamic facial movement, such as between the brows with frowning….or the crow’ s feet from smiling… or around the mouth from excessive pursing of the lips.. With ageing, this repetitive motion the skin starts to show strain and deep folds and tiny wrinkles start to develop. Botox will also help prevent a mouth frown by relaxing the muscles that exert a downward pull to the mouth.

When we were younger and our skin had abundant collagen, the only lines and wrinkles we had were dynamic. Our face was otherwise wrinkle-free when we weren’t animated. All dynamic wrinkles, with age, will eventually lead to static wrinkles as collagen is depleted and constant motion “cracks” the skin. Dynamic Wrinkles are caused by facial expressions and repetitive facial movements. Each time we use a facial muscle, a groove forms beneath the surface of the skin, which is why we see lines form with each facial expression. As skin ages and loses its elasticity, the skin stops springing back to its line-free state, and these grooves become permanently etched on the face as fine lines and wrinkles.

For the body: Injections also can be used to block chemical signals from nerves that stimulate sweat glands. You can get long term improvement of excessive sweating.

Another indication is for chronic migraine. It is injected into fixed-sites in varying locations, including the forehead, temples and potentially extending into the neck muscles.

It is frequently used to relieve teeth grinding and jaw (TMJ) pain.

With the millions of injections that are performed annually, evidence and experience have shown that prolonged use over a period of 10 years does slow down the ageing process .If we can relax these facial expressions , then we can prevent the breaks in the skin, commonly known as wrinkles. If the skin is continually relaxed, collagen can build up in the area that is treated and the wrinkle will improve. Repeated injections (every 4 to 5months) will ensure a superior long term result as collagen is not depleted by the constant motion of our muscles.

Consumers are always interested in maintaining a youthful appearance, and as the global population’s median age increases, this market is increasingly expanding. When we are younger, the brow and jaw line elevators are more prominent and the face appears constantly elevated.

As we age, the dynamics change and the depressors takeover and combined with gravity, a gradual sagging of our brow and jaw line takes place. If we can keep the dynamics between elevators and depressors neutral with strategically placed injections every 4 to 6 months, then the sagging that occurs with ageing will be reduced.

Multiple clinical studies have shown that a modest elevation occurs in the range of 1 to 3 mms which in the face can be a make areal observable difference. Once it “kicks” in 10 days later, the face takes on a relaxed and refreshed look and one’s face appears to glow.

In other words, an anti ageing effect is achieved because it relaxes the downward pressure that the depressor muscles exert on the facial tissues. This results in the elevator muscles of the face becoming more dominant, raising the brow and jaw line and preventing the downturned mouth or mouth frown.

Botulinum Toxin is used in children as young as 2 with cerebral palsy with doses 200 times the amount used in cosmetic injections. it has been used in the cosmetic industry for over 10years without any reports of allergy or long-term side effects. Although the substance is derived from a bacterium, as are many of our other commonly used medicines, it is able to be used for treatment because it is injected in extremely small amounts . You would have to use doses in excess of 600 times the amount used cosmetically to cause illness. Consequently it is one of the safest medical procedures performed.

You should be injected at a physician’s office by an experienced and trained medical doctor with an intimate knowledge and understanding of the muscular anatomy of the face as well as the aesthetic implications of proper placement. The final outcome of the procedure is very dependent on the experience of the injector. In addition side effects will be minimized if done by an experienced practitioner.

Botulinum Toxin has not been studied in pregnant or breastfeeding women so its use is not recommended in these groups.

Usually you will have a mosquito-bite looking area for 20 minutes which resolves without a trace. Try not to fall asleep or relax in a recumbent position for at least 4 hours after a procedure as this may rarely lead to some diffusion or spreading of the Botox Facial to adjacent areas and causing problems. For the same reason avoid vigorous rubbing or massaging the area for 24 hours. Similarly should also avoid overheating your face with activities such as excessive exercise or saunas.

Your regular skin care regimen can be resumed immediately following a treatment, and makeup may be applied if desired.

Try to avoid aspirin containing products, high-dosage vitamin E and C, and fish oil supplements for 48 hours before the Botox procedure unless medically necessary. Avoidance of these for 10 days prior to the procedure is recommended to avoid bruising.

Creating a naturally young looking face requires advanced injecting techniques, but most importantly an artful injector who is sensitive to the client’s needs as well as examining each face individually and studying the way particular muscles are being used.

We assess each client on an individual basis and a treatment plan is developed according to their needs. We believe in creating a natural look without looking overdone.

You laugh, you frown, you concentrate and over time, those expressions leave their mark upon your face. Until today there wasn’t a lot you could do about it. Today there’s a solution, it’s a simple non-surgical procedure that can dramatically reduce even your toughest wrinkle within days.

Most reputable practitioners and aesthetic clinics charge by the unit, so the total cost depends on how much and how many areas you’ll be having treated. The cost also varies as some patients require more in each area because of gender differences, muscle mass differences etc.

Please be aware there is a competitive productive available on the market that cut price clinics frequently use. This product is inferior and will not give the same lasting results. Make sure you ask for the product made by Allergan when comparing prices.

We do not quote per area as the amount of units differs in each patient – male and female. Generally, men need approximately 1.5 times the amount that women need due to a larger muscle mass. The usual quotation is based approximately 20 units per frown or crows feet area and lesser amounts for forehead lines etc. Keep in mind that the less units injected, the less the duration of effect. This is why it is so important to know exactly how many units you have received for each area.

When phoning around to compare prices, it is important that the clinic quotes the amount of units you will be receiving if they quote per area. It is best to compare the price per unit as the clinic may quote you so much per area but only inject a suboptimal amount in that one area, and also different areas require vastly different doses, for example you may require 20 units in the frown and only 6-8 units in the forehead. If suboptimal doses are given, the duration of effect will be much shorter than the usual 3 to 4 months.

Whilst it is totally unethical for the product to be over diluted, this practice is not unheard of. Remember if the price seems too good to be true, ask yourself why? Also remember that while travelling overseas fake or over diluted product is common place.

The price per unit should also not be your only consideration. To get the most satisfactory result you also need to also consider the experience, knowledge and reputation of the injector.
